Wild & Wonderful Update

March & April

It was a very busy couple of months for Wild & Wonderful Forest School! We were on the move, took some amazing field trips, built a mud kitchen, and ended the semester with an amazing art show for charity!

Special Guests

A HUGE thank you to the several special guests we were able to learn from these past couple of months! We are so thankful to be a part of such a supportive and inspiring community!

Thank you to meteorologist, Brandon Stover, for coming out and teaching the children about weather. We also thank Mary Kerns, author of The Flowers Are Speaking (coming in 2027), for teaching our students about wildflowers.

We’re also grateful to Fred Nyhuis and his friend Jerill Vance from The Appalachian Heritage Woodshop for helping our Littles class build their very own mud kitchen.

A special thank you to Berry Crutchfield (The Bug Guy) from the Department of Agriculture for sharing his knowledge and passion for insects.

Thank you to friend and pilot, Mark White, for allowing us to take an amazing field trip to learn all about aviation and airplanes.

Forest School on the Move

For one week per semester, Forest School moves locations. This past March the Littles and Middles met at Coonskin, while the Trailblazers met at Valley Park. A HUGE thank you to Meghan Boyle for coming out and teaching the Trailblazers wilderness first aid. They walked away knowing how to make a stretcher out of jackets and sticks. They also learned how to build a sling.

Trailblazers Teach Littles

For one week the Trailblazers and Littles class combined! The Trailblazers taught the Littles class. The Trailblazers were able to choose their topic they wanted to teach. The Littles class walked away learning all about cardinals, how to set a snare trap, concealing coloration, as well as the anatomy of a flower.

Wild & Wonderful Art Show

To celebrate an amazing year, Wild & Wonderful Forest School had an end of the year art show to show off their work and raise money for foster children. It was such a memorable night for them all. Together we had over 160 people in attendance and raised $ 1,000 dollars for the Underprivileged Children Foundation! Thank you to all those who attended and so generously gave to our cause to help foster children!

Forest School Fitness

Thank you to Ricki and Michael Gullion of Kid Fit for hosting our group. Their son is part of the forest school, which makes this connection even more special. I truly value supporting one another, uplifting small businesses, and staying involved in our community.

More Wild & Wonderful Moments

Enjoying the ant farms! We studied all about ants, including how they give off smells to communicate.

Dyeing easter eggs! Students painted their eggs with baking soda, water, and food coloring. They then poured vinegar over top of the eggs to create a chic color.

On our hikes these past couple of months we have found several signs of spring, including frog spawn!

In March we had Dr. Seuss Week. The Littles class dressed wacky in honor of the Dr. Seuss book Wacky Wednesday.

For Earth Day the Littles class recycled old pop cans into candles!

Learning all about bees! We now have two hives to study!
